Making Connections:
In the article “Annoying Ways People Use Sources”, Kyle D. Stedman show students how they are quoting sources wrong and give example on how to fix them. The author compares the way we source articles/authors as a slow driver in the left lane as that lane is for fast drivers who want to pass. He does this because readers are quoting like they don’t know how to or because they just do not care enough to do it right. Stedman gives many examples on the most commonly mistakes, how to correctly source them, and great and poor quoting. I feel this article unlike other about this topic does an amazing job on the connections from quoting to things that would happen/ or that we say as students. I’ve been told many times on how to cite sources and it seems like every teacher as their own specific detail that they want us (students) to do from other teachers. One great connection Stedman stats is “I swear I did some research”. The author explains this as when we paraphrase a source, change it with our own ideas and then provide a citation at the end. He does this example because he wants us to learn that when we add our own ideas to a quote or idea that it is hard for the teacher/professor to see what is our own work and what is someone’s else, so it is like we add the citation at the end to show that “I swear I did some research.”
