Serial Selfies Reflection

In a sense we present a different version of ourselves in each profile picture we choose”(42). This was stated by Rettberg, and it made me think of how every profile picture we are showing our friends a little about our selves. I remember when I first started an Instagram my profile pic was of me with a happy birthday hat that I took in front of a mirror. I remember that chose that one because I was never into the whole selfie thing, and really didn’t care what it was as long as people could tell it was me. Then when I got into high school I deleted my Instagram and made a new one because to many random accounts were following me and sending me links all the time and it was getting old so I made my new one and chose a pic of me with two friends that one of their moms took on the first day. I kept that one because by that time almost everybody was following me and I really didn’t care. Then when I decided to change it, it was a picture of me with my four main friends to this day. I’ve kept that one because honestly over high school they were only the people I would hangout with daily. I had a lot of friends during high school but we wouldn’t do much outside of school unless we did something right after or were skipping class. I’ve also kept that same profile picture up because we have became a family and we always have each other back no matter the case. “People can feel pressured into demonstrating a certain group identity” (41). Many people want their profile picture to be the best picture of them because they want to present them selves as the perfect person and nothing is ever wrong in their lives, but in reality its not and that’s why I haven’t changed mine because that picture means more to me that of a pic by myself when I’m happy at that moment.
